There are many factors to consider when choosing one of the many debt collection agencies. You want to work with agencies that are thorough, have a well-trained staff, and utilize the technology necessary to uncover information about your debtor. Yet there are other important issues to consider too.

•Do collections agencies have to be licensed?

Not all States require an agency to be licensed. It’s best to deal with a licensed agency because they follow state collection laws and are audited regularly. It is suggested that you contact the appropriate state licensing department to validate an agency’s license. For Michigan https://www2.dleg.state.mi.us/colaLicVerify/lSearch.jsp you will need the complete name of the agency you are looking for or the license owner or managers name when searching i.e. American Credit Association LLC, if you do not know the exact name you can select option 1 or if you do not know the complete name of the agency you are looking for select option 3.

• Which collections agencies are well-versed in applicable State and Federal collection law?

Ask if the agency staff is regularly trained and tested on their knowledge of compliance requirements.

• Where is the agency located?

It is important to know if the agency is located in your State or geographical area; local debt collection agencies will know the state’s laws and have an established network of resources. It’s also easier to make direct contact with the debtor when the agency is local. Remember an agency which is located where you are knows that area better than outsiders, which will result in greater probability of recovery.

• Will the collections agencies provide references and allow on-site visits?

A list of references is usually available upon request. At American Credit Association a list of references and on-site visits are available. Any of our clients are welcome to take advantage of these opportunities but we just ask you to set up an appointment.

• How do I turn accounts over for collections?
There are a few different ways you can list accounts with our agency, the easiest would be to fax (1-866-523-0592) or email (sales@americancredit1.com) a complete itemized statement with a copy of patient information sheet or copy of any contracts (in most cases non medical). You can mail the above information or use our online form, just pick the form that is best suited for you.
